Dame Gail Ronson launches Jewish Children of the Year 2009
Dame Gail Ronson launched the inaugural Jewish Children of the Year awards at a reception at Camp Simcha in Hendon last week.
Dame Gail is chairman of a judging panel which includes Stephen Pollard, editor of the Jewish Chronicle, Nick Ferrari, broadcaster and journalist, Karen Phillips, chief executive of the Manchester Jewish Federation, senior medical practitioners and communal lay leaders.
The awards, presented jointly by JCD and Camp Simcha, have been created to celebrate the achievements of Jewish children in the UK.
Members of the public will be invited to nominate children in one of four categories -- Extraordinary Achievement, Bravery in the Face of an Enormous Challenge, Chesed; Acts of Loving Kindness and Contribution to the Community.
The finalists -- and their families -- will be invited to a Chanukah tea party and ceremony at a central London hotel on Sunday December 13 when the winners will be announced.
Daniel Burger, executive director of JCD, said: "This is a very exciting event and, for the first time, we will be able to recognise the amazing achievements of Anglo-Jewry's children.
"It is especially fitting that as a charity set up more than 60 years ago to raise funds on the first Sunday of Chanukah for children by children, we are able to co-host this event on our anniversary."
Neville Goldschneider, executive director of Camp Simcha, said: "As a charity that works with extraordinarily brave children throughout the year, we are delighted to team up with our colleagues at JCD to celebrate the bravery, kindness and achievement of children and young people in our community."
The Jewish Chronicle is the event's media sponsor.
Nominations opened when Dame Gail switched on a specially created website www.jcy.org.uk at the launch. They will close on October 30.
